Natural Baby Bites: Avocado Mash

Creamy, dreamy avocado. We love it, and so will our babies. Did you know that avocados are considered the “perfect food?” It’s said that avocados contain everything that a person needs to survive. We think this is a great reason to introduce avocado to your baby at an early age – between 4 to 6 months.*

Avocados are loaded with healthy “good” fats, folate, fiber, potassium, and an abundance of vitamins (A,Bs, and C!) Let’s get that avocado in your baby’s belly.

When choosing an avocado, you may want to opt for organic. They are loaded with pesticides, in most cases, when not organic. A ripe avocado should be soft, but not mushy. A good test is to pop the remaining “stem.” If it is brown underneath the stem, it may be too late. Look for a green top and softness. Since avocados are eaten raw, this is a particularly easy recipe. Simply scoop out the middle and mash with a fork. To jazz things up, you can add banana.

Avocado & Banana Mash

Ingredients:

  • ½ avocado, scooped out
  • ½ banana, peeled and mashed
  • Water

To make:

  • Place in a blender
  • Add water for consistency

If this is the first time you are feeding your baby avocado, you may want to start with a simple mash. It is much easier to pinpoint a reaction to a food when there is only one in play. If you get the green avocado light, go ahead and add the banana.

*Always speak with your pediatrician about your baby’s diet, of course.
